5 Awesome Indies Shown At E3 2019

Many a gamer has labeled this year’s E3 presentation as “lukewarm” or “underwhelming.” While this sentiment is definitely understandable due to the glaring lack of a Psychonauts 2 release date, for indie game fans like myself E3 2019 has been one of the best in years. Not only did we get a release date for the much-anticipated Picnic Panic DLC for The Messenger, but we also got some amazing news that a massive amount of indies are headed to Xbox Game Pass at launch. And an entire effing showcase featuring over sixty indie games. With this massive tidal wave of indie games coming our way in the next few months I wanted to take a second to put the spotlight on five awesome indie games shown at E3 2019.

Renaine

In this 2D action-platformer, you’ll play as Aine the Pheonix Knight on her journey to destroy the legendary dragon. As you’d rightfully expect from the Pheonix Knight, death and failure aren’t issues. Renaine is a game about persevering in the face of defeat and overcoming failure. When all is lost die, die again until you’ve vanquished your mythic foe. But make sure to help a few of the locals along the way. Doing this will offer you not only a look into this world’s dense lore, but also a wealth of emblems and permanent upgrades. Renaine is set to release some time in 2019 and I. for one. can’t wait.

CrossCode

CrossCode is an indie action RPG developed by Radical Fish Games and published by Deck13. It boasts an amazing fast-paced combat system and beautiful 16-bit graphics, all the while telling a Sci-fi Isekai story similar to .Hack or Log Horizon. Being a massive fan of not only Isekai anime but also MMORPGs, CrossCode has been on my radar for quite some time. I, like many other filthy console players, have been waiting for its belated release. Luckily it’s due to release on Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch sometime in 2019.

Ikenfell

Ikenfell is a turn-based tactical RPG developed by Happy Ray Games and Published By Humble Bundle. In Ikenfell, you’ll play as a group of magic students on a journey of friendship and love. As a pixel whore I, of course, love the art style of Ikenfell. But I imagine one of the major draws for this awesome indie is actually the soundtrack, which is composed by the minds behind the music for popular cartoon Steven Universe. Fans of indies and cartoons will have to wait for this one because no release window has been announced.

Blasphemous

In this grotesque action-platformer, you play as the penitent one who sets out to uncover the truth behind and break the curse that allows him to die and be reborn. Get ready to be stabbed, pummeled, and torn limb from limb over and over again. Masochists and fans of the Dark Souls series will eventually rejoice when Blasphemous is available for purchase. But sadly that doesn’t seem to be coming any time soon.

Hollow Knight: SilkSong

Last, but not least, is Hollow Knight: Silksong. What was originally meant to be DLC for the critically acclaimed Metroidvania Hollow Knight is a full-fledged sequel that follows princess of Hollownest, Hornet, as she adventures throughout a whole new kingdom. Whether you’re a fan of the original because of its meticulous combat or expansive lore you’re guaranteed to enjoy this much-anticipated sequel. With its Steam page having a TBA release date, we might be waiting a while.

Of course, these aren’t the only great indies that were shown at E3 2019. Just a few that happened to catch my eye. So if you’re a fan of indie games I implore you, do yourself a favor and check out some of these awesome indie games!
