5 Must Play Indie Games Releasing In October 2019

The season of gaming is once again upon us. Each and every year we gamers approach with full wallets ready and willing to stretch our dollar as far as possible with the hopes of buying all the awesome AAA games, we can get our hands on. And of course, while still coming out the other side with enough money to sustain ourselves.

Yet many a friend has fallen into poverty due to the strain placed upon their wallet. That’s why, like the snake oil salesman I am, I’d like to lend a hand in your quest to bogart those Benjamins and offer a cost-effective way to sate your gaming appetites. How might I accomplish this herculean feat? I’m glad you asked. By sleeping on the next $60 release and instead picking up one of these five must play Indie Games releasing this October.

Felix The Reaper

In this romantic puzzle game you take control of Felix, an employee of the Ministry of Death on a quest to meet the love of his life. In pursuit of this goal, you’ll take the job of a field reaper who is sent to earth in order to orchestrate the deaths of many an individual. All the while, you’ll be silently hoping that while on earth you’ll cross paths with the apple of your eye, Betty The Maiden from the Ministry of Life.

Along the way, you’ll develop some awesome dance moves to impress Betty while listening to some amazing Jamz created by over ten different Indie artists. Felix The Reaper will be available on PC and Nintendo Switch on October 17th.

After Party

From Night School, the developers of Indie darling Oxenfree, comes a new likely hilarious adventure game called After Party. In After Party, two friends die and are sent to hell discover a loophole that will allow them re-entry to Earth. All they have to do is drink the devil himself under the table.

Fans of Oxenfree will recognize the expansive tree of dialogue options that allow the player to change the story on a whim. Take control of Milo and Lola on their journey of drunken mistakes and self-discovery when After Party comes the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC and Mac via the Epic Games Store on October 29.

Spooky Ghosts Dot Com

This Halloween, help yourself to a spooky little Metroidvania on the Nintendo Switch with Spooky Ghosts Dot Com. Aid Ruby the Ghosthunter on her largest job yet as she explores an expansive mansion, battles terrible ghosts and saves a cat or two.

With five different areas and over fifty rooms to explore this title is easily worth the $4.99. Spooky Ghosts Dot Com is available now on the Nintendo Switch.

Indivisible

I know, I know you’re trying to save money this season. But trust me this next title will definitely be worth the $40 price tag. From the team that brought you Skullgirls comes a new Action Platformer/RPG Indivisible. Take control of Ajna, a rebellious young girl on her quest to save all she knows from destruction. Along the way, you’ll encounter a plethora of companions called “Incarnations” that you can absorb and manifest to fight alongside you.

With its blend of fantastic hand-drawn art and real-time combat, this is sure to be a must-play title in October no matter how crowded the month might be. Indivisible is available on Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC on October 8th.

Children of Morta

Children of Morta is a Rogue-Lite Action-RPG by indie developer Dead Mage. In this title you’ll take control of the Bergsons, a family of mighty heroes tasked with staving off the incoming corruption. You’re able to play each of the family members which seems to keep the gameplay from getting stale, unlike many games of its ilk.

My main issue with many Rogue-Lite and Rogue-Like games is the lack of story. This doesn’t seem to be an issue in Children of Morta. The Bergsons go through everything a normal family in their position would while risking their lives to save the world.

It’s been hard holding myself back from picking up Children of Morta on PC instead of waiting for the console/physical release… especially after our very own David Lambden gave is such a favorable review. Luckily, I’m both incredibly stubborn and easily distracted. Children of Morta will be available on Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on October 15th with a physical release on October 29th.

Hopefully this list of awesome Indie Games helps you save a couple of bucks this October. But if you’re anything like me, you’ll just use the money you saved to buy more games when Black Friday rolls around. What can I say, the life of a gamer is a vicious and penniless cycle.
