A Gummy’s Life Must Be Dull -Review (PC)

A Sub Par Party Game Weighed Down By Limited Controls

If I’ve learned anything from A Gummy’s Life, it would be how miserable their lives are and how compelled I am to eat them all in an attempt to save them from this life of mediocrity all Gummies apparently live. The tag line for the game says, “the gummies have come to life and they are unmanageable.” This is more accurate than they could even imagine considered you never feel in complete control of the gummy that you choose to fight as.

The premise here is simple, up to eight frienemies can compete in local or online co-op to be the last gummy standing. While this could have been a lot of fun, the controls really limit what you can do to be the king of the hill. As you take on each foe in a WrestleMania style gummy match, the only two attacks you have at your disposal are kick and headbutt. Most of the time it just looks and feels as though you are flailing around uncontrollably as the winner is chosen by accident and not due to skill. As you approach your opponent, preparing to kick and or headbutt, you’ll find that you cannot really tell when the attacks land and when they don’t. Juice will spray as the fight continues and as you taunt your enemy (oddly enough there are more controls to taunt than to attack, thanks Fortnite emotes) you never truly know who will come out victorious until one of you just disappears.

Thankfully the gummy characters are funny and, with a variety of colors to choose from, you can create a cool looking character with which to go into battle. The levels are also well thought out and add a variety of obstacles and settings upon which to fight – helping to break up the actual monotony of the fighting itself.

Local multiplayer is truly the only way to play this game. Since the characters are ridiculous and it’s always fun to beat your friends at, well just about anything, playing with your friends can be fun for a couple matches. But soon the hilarity will wear off and you’ll be left with just a sub-par gaming experience. Online matches are hard to come by since the player base is currently so small. When they happen, they don’t feel much different than playing by yourself since the controls never make you feel like you’re in charge of your own destiny.

Hopefully as time goes on the game will evolve and a more thought out set of moves will be added to the game.. But until that happens it’s hard to sink too much time into A Gummy’s Life.

Recommendation:

At a price point of $14.99 it’s hard to recommend this game to just about anyone. If there is ever a sale and the price is around $5 it may be worth it for a few laughs, but only if you have enough friends to sit around and make it worthwhile. For your money, there are just much better ways to spend your time than A Gummy’s Life. The  problem isn’t that it’s broken. It’s that A Gummy’s Life just isn’t that much fun.
