Alchemist Adventure – PAX East 2020 Preview

Alchemist Adventure is the newest narrative driven adventure title from super.com. This Breath of the Wild and anime inspired title focuses on potion crafting as its primary mechanic and drives both the game’s combat and exploration. We had a chance to check out an early build of the game with one of the developers ahead of its release in Q2 of this year.

The party piece of Alchemist Adventure is your ability to concoct a vast assortment of different potions. Various periodic elements strewn throughout the game world can be collected and melded together for wildly different results. Each potion has up to six slots meaning there are literally hundreds of combinations to discover.

Three different types of flasks can be used to create different potions – explosive flasks, ranged attack flasks and oil flasks. During our demo, we primarily used the ranged attacks. A simple fire potion was crafted early on and gave us the ability to fling a fire ball at oncoming enemies. The results of adding iron to this potion enhanced the attack by increasing its damage and sending out a larger path of fire with an area of effect. Later in the game you’ll have access to oils which can be applied to weapons for varying effects.

Rounding out your arsenal are melee attacks. A sword was used in the demo to deal with enemies up close and personally. As you progress through the game, you’ll unlock skill points. These points can be invested into various abilities – whether it be harder hitting melee attacks, potion efficiency and better looting of materials.

Alchemist Adventure takes place in a world where those who practice alchemy were once regarded as godly figures. They were part of a higher echelon as society and well regarded for their mystical ability to meld and manipulate all the elements of the world. However, society gradually became resentful of alchemists and the power they held. This uprising resulted in a war being waged and ultimately left alchemists as exiled from society.

Our story starts with Mya – a chemical sorcerer in hiding. The death of her daughter forces Mya to find a way to use her hidden powers to resurrect her child. Along her journey to bring back her most precious child, Mya will encounter several enemies including massive spiders, enraged horned hogs, and relics of the war. Mya will also meet allies along her path, including those who give Mya side quests. In one side quest in the demo, we met a talking cat who asked that we help her by finding twenty-five pieces of iron. In exchange, the cat provided us with recipes for new potions.

Alchemist Adventure is shaping up to be a fun and accessible third person adventure. Fans of anime like Full Metal Alchemist will certainly want to check this out and it’s broad based potion crafting makes it appealing to an even wider audience. Alchemist Adventure will launch on PC and home consoles later this year.
