Biomutant – PAX East Preview
Biomutant was always a game I thought looked neat. I hadn’t however, heard buzz about it in a while. Because of this, the game flew under my radar. Luckily enough, while at PAX East, I was able to play the demo that was first revealed at Gamescom 2018. Not only did the demo re-spark my fire but, it made my interest in it burn even brighter.
Biomutant is an RPG that stands out. You play as a raccoon type character in an open post-apocalyptic world filled with creatures. One of my favorite parts of the demo, surprisingly enough, was the character creator. It was in-depth and quite extensive. You were able to change everything from the fur length, color, and even some of the face/body shapes. I found it incredibly interesting that changing your character’s stats would change the character’s physical appearance.
The gameplay felt great and gives you various ways to dispose of your foes. It felt more polished than other demos I’ve played. The minute to minute gameplay was very beat-em-up with a hint of ranged combat. I suspect that the introduction of more weapons will further vary the already interesting combat.
The narration is whimsical and a welcome deviation from this genre’s norm. It was very similar to the fun voiceovers of one of my most beloved games, Little Big Planet.
Overall I was very surprised by Biomutant and it will certainly be a game to keep an eye on. Experiment 101 is set to release it sometime in 2019.
