Brandon Duncan’s Top 5 Games of 2017

I will be eager to look back at 2017 and say I was there. I was a part of one of the best years of games that games has ever had. I also am looking forward to 2020 when all these amazingly standout titles inevitably get remasters.

Here are my top picks for 2017.

Nioh

As a fan of Dark Souls I was very interested in a game like Nioh. Little did I know that not only would this game take a lot from a series that I already love but it would also add things that I didn’t even know I wanted. This game has its own legs to stand on. The settings and the gameplay make for a perfect and very brutal game that was one of my top picks for this year.

Zelda: Breathe of the Wild

I was lucky enough to not only get my hands on a Switch in early 2017 but to have played Breath of the Wild as wellThis game single-handedly made my Switch purchase worth it. I am not sure if it was because this was my first Zelda experience (not a joke) or because this game was so masterfully crafted. Honestly, I’d have to say it was both. This game will be looked back at as one of the biggest and best to ever be made.

Wolfenstein ll: The New Colossus

After playing Wolfenstein: The New Order I knew going into this game that I would like it. What I did not know is that somehow this game was going to completely blow the socks off of the first one. Now by no means was the first game bad. It is one of my favorite games of all time. Somehow Wolf ll is so good it almost makes the first one suck in comparison. This games is the best shooter I have ever played hands down. The story is great and nothing beats hatcheting Nazis.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon  was a game that certainly looked good. It was a game that had a good concept. Before the release of this game I was unsure. New IPs can sometimes be tough. Post release was a completely different feel. This game was way more than I could have ever imagined. The world is exciting and filled with creatures for you to hunt. The robots are huge and hit hard. The characters make you feel. In a world with so many sequels, it is so refreshing to see something new be so well done.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

This year had a lot of firsts for me. Resent Evil 7 was one of those firsts. I had never played a game quite like this before. The first play through was terrifying. The adrenaline from hiding behind a corner or running from a monster was wonderful. I think this game is more creepy than anything and that is one of the many reasons I enjoyed it. Even after the first playthrough when you get used to the “scares” it still is a superb first person puzzle game. Mix that with collectibles and higher difficulties and this has to easily be one of the best in the series.

After my list had been made I sat back and thought that many other games could have just as easily been in this list. 2017 was a year that will not been soon forgotten in the games world. Now all I can hope is that 2018 will be able to keep up with what 2017 has already done.
