EarthNight (PSX 2017)

EarthNight is one we have been keeping an eye on and we can't wait to play it for real.

EarthNight is a game I have been watching for 3 years now. It is a pleasure playing all the games at PSX but there is something really special about playing the Indies. This game specifically has been one of the only returning ones that I have wanted to come back each year.

EarthNight has driven me back for multiple reasons. One of which is the art. This game is literally handmade. There is something so special about seeing things done in this way and I find a certain charm about games that are hand painted. It gives them a sort of charisma that rarely can be achieved with more mechanical design.

In addition to the game having a solid art style, the characters are also stand out features.

First, there’s Stanley. Stanley is a bearded badass. From what I could gather he is more of a beginner’s character. He has a sword that helps him cut through certain types of enemies which feels very satisfying. Stanley truly has a unique style about him and makes me really want to “rep” his face on a t-shirt.

Next, but certainly not least, is Sydney. This character seems to have some sort of secret dragon power hidden inside her. She is a more advanced character with a bit more complexity in her movements. Sydney has the ability, with the right timing, to do a dash in addition to her jumping. She uses her power much like Stanley does to help defeat dragons at the end of each run.

While art and characters are very important, equally as important to me is the theme playing behind you. Some of my best memories about games can instantly be pulled out of my subconscious by hearing a few chords. EarthNight certainly does not fall short in the music department. The sound track, even in the first couple worlds I played, was a delightful chip tune medley. Add in the music changing every level/world and it really adds into the experience as a whole. One of my favorite memories of PSX was when I visited this booth and one of the developers was playing along with the track on a guitar. It is easy to see that a real person worked on this music, but seeing someone do it in front of my eyes was truly unique.

Something that I really thought was interesting was that on Cleaversoft’s website it says “EarthNight will be released when it is done.” Although I have waited patiently to play the game in its entirety, I think that this statement really shows the dedication to doing things right. The runner mechanics are very solid and this aspect paired with the art and the music make this game the whole package.

This game does not have a solid date for release other than 2018. Regardless, we are very much looking forward to EarthNight and we think you should be too.
