Ghostrunner – PAX East 2020 Preview
Ghostrunner is gruelingly hard – but in a good way.
Ghostrunner has players navigating a futuristic world, wall running, and clearing violent enemies. Players will watch as limbs go flying after landing a successful run.
This game is not for someone looking for a casual experience. The gameplay is complex and relies heavily on timing and precise button inputs. This makes for a very satisfying Hotline Miami-esque gameplay loop. One shot for one kill leaves little room for error. The sense of elation you get from successfully chained kills is thrilling.
Ghostrunner might only have a blade for now, but there are other tools at your disposal. A grappling hook added a whole new element to gameplay and helped to make the environments more complex. My time with the demo didn’t have me learning any new abilities, but I’m sure the game continues on an upward path to diversifying gameplay.
A strong cyberpunk aesthetic is front and center as neon lights pop out with color against dirty buildings, complete with tattered and gruff enemies.
