Miasma Caves – PAX East Preview
There’s nothing new about roguelike games about exploring caves, but Miasma Caves shows a promising start to bring new elements to the table. My demo started in a cave where I searched for treasure with my pickaxe and claws. What makes Miasma Caves unique is how the only dangers in the cave are environmental hazards. The game was described to us as a “pacifist roguelike” and, during our demo, we didn’t see a single enemy. Once back on the surface, the local town (though not quite complete yet) showed to be a charming place to buy and sell goods.
I found my way to a shop that would buy the treasures I found in the cave. Once I was squared away with a pocket heavy with coins, I went around and spoke with some of the locals in the town. Though there were just a few people to talk to, I was told that eventually the town will be a much busier place with things to do and side quests.
I made it back to the cave and it was totally different from before. Bright neon mushrooms lit up the floor along with peaceful slimes who scurried around. I picked up some new treasures and headed back to the surface as my demo ended.
Overall, Miasma Caves showed a lot of promise for what could be a unique roguelike experience. I’m curious about how the loop with stay interesting with the lack of combat, but the game is off to a strong start in its early stages. You can check it out on Steam Early Access now.
