PSX 2017 is loaded with games that are trying to do something different. Developers need something to make their game really stand out from the crowded lineup of games releasing in 2018. One of the games at the top of this list is MOTHERGUNSHIP. At first glance, the game harkens back to classics like Doom and Quake, a comparison that developer Joe Mirabello was delighted to hear. While the comparisons are there on the surface, the game stands out as a completely different experience on its own merits.
One of the major differences comes in the form of a deep weapons crafting system. As you progress through the game you collect crafting pieces along the way which you can use in shops to craft and upgrade your weapon. This system is incredibly deep and one of the most creative that we have come across. You can add seemingly infinite connectors which adds a creative way to change the minute-to-minute gameplay. For example, adding fifteen barrels to your gun may seem badass, but may potentially only enable you to fire it once before it overheats, leaving you vulnerable. The creative weapon crafting paired with the weapon economy add a surprising level of depth to the experience, not found in titles like Doom. This will make you really think before you start piecing together your blaster.
MOTHERGUNSHIP also takes jumping to the next level. Some levels require you to reach some incredible heights and stringing together a bunch of jumps at once helps you to reach these platforms with ease. The controls feel so comfortable that you will jump from platform to platform without the fear of falling. In a game where exploration plays such a key role, it’s good to know that if you do happen to fall trying to reach a ledge, you won’t receive any fall damage. This allows you to continue on your journey without losing all of your progress.
The rogue-like aspects of MOTHERGUNSHIP can make for an interesting and individualized experience. During our play through we wandered around looking for a shop door to open we ran into a bunch of baddies and immediately regretted our decision to stray from the beaten path. While playing this game you will experience many different scenarios, all ranging in degrees of difficulty since the stages are all procedurally generated. This aspect of the game should give it legs longer than your average shooter. Mirabello is hoping that people will continue playing Mothergunship long after they normally would play a game like this since each experience will feel completely fresh.
Mothergunship is expecting to release in 2018 make sure you keep this one on your radar going into the new year.
