My Friend Pedro – PAX East Preview
My Friend Pedro is incredibly violent and you should feel ashamed of yourself for being interested in playing it. At the same time, you’ll feel like a total boss, so it’s probably worth the guilt.
Pedro is a banana. He’s apparently sentient. And he’s your friend. Also, it seems that he wants you to kill people.
This is the setup for the highly anticipated and frenetic upcoming title from Devolver Digital and DeadToast Entertainment. In our PAX East demo, we essentially barreled through the tutorial, a few intermediate levels, and then faced off in a sick motorcycle chase… er, fight… a motorcycle chase fight.
In this two dimensional torrent of destruction you’ll have to shoot, spin, crouch and take cover, roll, and finesse your way out of dangerous situations. The way you navigate the world is somewhat up to you, but the result is always the same – you kill everyone you see.
At the forefront of My Friend Pedro’s gameplay is the unique dual/split aiming. You’ll always be pointing your head, and therefore weapons, in one direction. However, your character can dual wield pistols. This makes for an awesome opportunity to lock on to one enemy while focusing on another one and them shooting them both. It takes a minute to grasp the controls but, once you do, it feels incredibly satisfying.
Slow motion mechanics paired with all of the ways you can traverse through the levels only add to the satisfaction of spinning and flipping in air while dodging bullets and killing bad guys. My Friend Pedro is nothing if not entertaining, and it will make you feel like you can do just about anything.
My Friend Pedro impressed us so much at PAX East that we decided to give it one of our Editor’s Choice Awards. We’re excited to see what the final product will bring this summer when it releases on PC and Switch.
