Pikuniku is a delightful minimalistic platformer from developer Sectordub and published by Devolver Digital.
In Pikuniku, you play as a little red character that is simply a red oval with eyes and legs. The world is filled with other cute nonsensical beings who need your help. Despite its bright and colorful aesthetic, something sinister is afoot, with ominous security cameras peaking behind buildings. The mystery of the Big Brother-like town is somehow perfectly contrasted with the minimal cartoony style and has me very curious.
Most of my time was spent completing simple tasks for other folks around the village, like helping to repair a bridge or fixing the face on a scarecrow. Each interaction was cuter than the last and I found myself smiling the entire demo.
Cuteness can only go so far, so I’m pleased to say Pikuniku was also really fun to play. It’s simple, with mostly only kicking and jumping, but the environments really add to the gameplay to keep things fresh.
Pikuniku is delightfully charming, and I can’t wait to play more. The single player is so cute that you’re going to want a friend there with you so you can enjoy it together.
