Platted That! – Assassins Creed: Odyssey

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey really surprised the Handsome Phantom crew. Many of us were willing to write this game off, especially in a year with so many amazing titles coming out. Against all odds, Odyssey delivers a stellar RPG that is epic in every sense of the word. The Platinum Trophy requires a significant time investment, but the stories along the way are well written, and fun as heck.

Organic

A great deal of Odyssey’s trophies will be completed through the main story, but the story actually has three branches. The central path is marked by quest icons and will take players almost all over Greece, there’s also the elimination of the Cult of Kosmos, and the sealing of an ancient city. Beating the game and fully exploring the story of Odyssey requires completing all three paths. The critical path takes players on a journey to reunite their family. Along the way, the Cult of Kosmos is going to be violently reduced by the misthios. But actually defeating the Cult will not come about without a conscious effort to track them down. The silver lining is the amazing gear the Cultists drop. This gear may not be the most powerful in the game, but its the coolest looking stuff you can rock, especially if you’re looking to cosplay as Wonder Woman. The final path, sealing the city, gives you a nudge in the right direction, is much more hands off than the other two, but takes considerably less time to complete. There are some revelations here, and the best boss battles in the game.

If you’re under the impression this will be a quick Plat, I have some news…

By eliminating the Cult, players will have collected the currency necessary for upgrading the spear, which opens up top tier abilities. Kassandra (Alexios) has already come so far, but there are a ton of activities, quest-lines, and explorable areas that are still needed for the Platinum Trophy.

Mop-up

Is this a basement where the septic line has backed up into the house due to a faulty installation ten years ago? Cause there’s a lot of shit to mop-up. Thankfully, the locations and activities required are pretty fun. As always, Handsome Phantom recommends cracking open a cold beer or soda while cranking these out.

The Arena in the southern section of the map has its own achievement associated with it, but it ties into “Top of the Food Chain,” which requires players to become the first mercenary. This is a basic ladder system that plays like a watered down nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor/Shadow of War. No doubt players will have already risen several ranks through the mercenary system just through completing the critical path. Many of the remaining mercenaries can be marked on the map, or challenged in the arena. By the time the end game starts, most of the mercenaries should be easy pickings.

The game has moments off the beaten path that are incredibly well written and excellently delivered.

Players will also need to complete specific side quest-lines. Not all of them, but the Olympic quests, the Daughters of Artemis, Xenia’s, Markos’, and Hippokrates’ are needed. Most of them are pretty straight forward, but Xenia’s quest-lines are structured like classic treasure hunts, with little maps as clues. The topography of Greece is varied and unique, so these are pretty easy to find. There’s also a gold tier trophy for completing 20 side-quests on Pephka, Obsidian, and Abantis islands that shouldn’t cause too much trouble.

The only remaining trophy that will require a significant amount of effort is “Child of Poseidon,” which is one of the least unlocked trophies in Odyssey. Where Origins required players to complete the optional objectives at every location on the map, Odyssey only wants players to clear underwater locations. This is made a lot easier with a specific trident that lets players swim underwater without running out of air. The trident can be located here. A map of all the underwater objectives is pretty handy, which can be found here. It’s not too bad, and the seas of Greece are as beautiful as they are scary.

I wasn’t too afraid of the sharks, but I’ve heard stories of Shrieking Eels…

By this point, any remaining trophies should be pretty easy to wrap up. And there you have an Assassin’s Creed Platinum trophy, an AssPlat, if you will. Congratulations misthios!
