Star Renegades Gets Launch Window, Revamped Visuals

Back at PAX East 2019 we took an early look at Star Renegades and came away more than impressed. This is a game boasting a seriously striking pixelated art style and a unique fusion of RPG, adversary system, and rogue-lite mechanics. Developer Massive Damage made a splash at Gamescom in Germany this past week with a pair of updates on the game.

First off, we finally have a launch window for one of our most anticipated indie titles of 2020. While we don’t have an exact date yet, we now know the game will launch on Nintendo Switch and Steam in the spring of next year. Here’s hoping that means early March rather than late May.

The second major update is that the game has been given a revamped graphical style that developers are referring to as 2DX or “Two Dimensional Xtreme.” The game’s publisher Raw Fury took to Twitter to describe the games new visual art direction:

“A masterful combination of 2D and 3D graphics are seamlessly blended together to bring you a truly breathtaking visual experience.”

Fans of the popular Nintendo Switch RPG Octopath Traveller will be familiar with this kind of graphical effect. By adding an almost kaleidoscopic movement effect to the camera, two dimensional elements are given a three dimensional illusion. Based on the game’s new trailer, first shown off in Germany on Tuesday, it certainly looks like this update will elevate an already visually stunning experience.

The new trailer for Star Renegades provides glimpse at the game’s use of the adversary system. A top-down view of a grid like table shows players their fallen allies and the paths they’ve taken through enemy ranks. Each fallen team member who isn’t revived has a chance to be captured and reanimated by the enemy. This will inevitably lead to a boss like showdown with what was once your squad mate.
