Super Crome: Bullet Purgatory – PAX East Preview
Super Crome takes us back to a simpler time when games like Galaga and Astroids were king. Super Crome however adds elements that would have taken these classics to the next level.
Much like its spiritual predecessors, Super Crome is an arcade shooter that involves you killing ongoing waves of enemies. Unlike the games of old this one has more of a bullet hell feel. Another welcome surprise in this game was a boss mechanic. The boss we fought was difficult but we loved it. Much like any bullet hell game there is never just one projectile coming at you at a time. To help compensate for this, the developers have added a very satisfying dash mechanic. We found utilizing this function to be 100% necessary. When dashing, players are offered a brief window of invulnerability. This got us out of a sticky situation or two.
The style of the game is not overly complicated and is instantly classic. The colors are almost neon against the pure black background. We really loved the multiple vibrantly colored enemies and are eager to see what else will be added.
Super Crome would be right at home in an arcade cabinet and, if given a chance, we think this would be an amazing way to play. The developers have even added a high score leaderboard. Adding your initials after a good run is, and has always been, the best way to get bragging rights.
Super Crome is currently in early access on steam. We are very much looking forward to how this game will evolve as it approaches a full release. The developer even mentioned that they planned on adding a story mode at some point. Super Crome has added great things to the formula and we hope you’ll check it out. We think you won’t regret it.
